Many years ago, John Portman selected a vibrant red paint colour for an accent wall in the Portman Design Studio in Atlanta.
He also started autographing his books with a red starburst.
The same red tone was then used in the graphics works of the Portman organization.
We started calling this colour “the Portman Red”.
So, our initial colour reference for Alberto Rosselli’s Jumbo chairs was the Portman Red.
Starting from this red tone, we selected a series of positive and pleasant colours that would bring joy to those viewing the Jumbo chairs and hopefully ultimately using them, particularly after the difficult moments of the last few years of the COVID pandemic
The collaboration between Saporiti Italia and Portman Architects and particularly between Sergio Saporiti and John Portman, led in the past to the creation of some very interesting design objects, including the Entelechy armchairs and the Sling chairs.
For this reason, Saporiti Italia asked to Bill Bradfield, for many years a very close collaborator of John Portman, and to Jarel Portman, one of John’s five children, to choose ten colours for the Jumbo chairs of the 100+1 Exhibition.
William (Bill) Bradfield started working in the Interior Design department of John Portman and Associates in 1969, which he then headed for many years.
John Portman and Associates has created many important and iconic architecture and design projects, including the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco, the Peachtree Center in Atlanta, the InterContinental Hotel in Singapore, the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco, the Marriot Marquis of Atlanta and New York.
Bill Bradfield worked and assisted John Portman in his work as an artist, painter and sculptor too, a very important work often closely integrated with the architectural works of the studio.
In 1998, Bill Bradfield moved to Gargano, on Lake Garda, to coordinate as Project Manager the renovation of the historic Villa Feltrinelli palace.
Jarel Portman was born into the business of design.
His father, the renowned architect John Portman, instilled a love of architecture and design in his son from a young age.
After majoring in hotel management, Jarel spent 25 years in the Portman family businesses, focused primarily on hospitality and mixed-use projects in the United States, China, and South Korea.
In 2011 he founded JPX Works, a company specializing in the development and redevelopment of urban areas. Among the most important projects of JPX Works, Inman Quarter, Lilli Midtown and 1405 Spring Street, all prestigious residential projects located in Atlanta.
